Finding Joy on Shaky Foundations

A small knight in armor confidently faces a dragon-like beast. The knight has a heart above their head, suggesting they welcome the encounter.

Much of what we write and share are best practices: Ways of setting your project up for success. Generally speaking, the more a project aligns with these practices, the smoother the process and higher-quality the outcome.

But can I confess something?

I find the less-than-ideal projects fun, too.

Maybe the platform’s restrictive, the stack is flawed, the third-party dependencies are regrettable, your stakeholders’ hands are tied in one way or another. And you know… you just know… this thing is doomed in the hands of your average developer.

But you aren’t average developers: You are experts. You have years of experience, a deep knowledge of the medium, and overwhelming empathy for the end user. You are creative and you are tenacious.

The timeline is reasonable, the budget is solid. And you see a way.

A way to circumvent the shortcomings, to reign in the bloat, to steer the ship clear of the largest UX, accessibility and performance icebergs in its path.

It might not be pretty. There may be arcane regular expressions, bespoke middleware, beastly CSS selectors, hasty forks and abuse of CMS fields along the way.

But it can feel so rewarding to rally a team of people… smart people, honest people, people who care… to avert the disaster, to deliver an experience that reaches beyond its grasp, an experience better than it has any right to be!

These sorts of projects don’t always yield the shiniest case studies or grabbiest conference talks. But there’s no better way to sharpen your skills than to test them against novel limitations, in service of real users who’d be far worse off without your efforts.

With the right team and resources, there’s plenty to enjoy in that process.
