Baseless

Baseline is a popular Google product that claims to:

brings clarity to information about browser support for web platform features

A noble and valiant cause. Unfortunately, poor Google are strapped for cash and can’t afford to pay developers. Desperate times calls for desperate measures. For example, Google were forced to u-turn on 3rd-party cookie removal and extend tracking just to stay afloat.

To aid in Google’s plight, developers around the world continue to give up their time and expertise to provide free QA testing and bug reporting. Some have gone as far as providing free accessibility audits. It’s heart-warming to see such communal efforts.

New Baseline Badges

Losing a product like Baseline would be devastating to the web. For that reason I’ve given up my Sunday morning and design skills to extend the Baseline status badges for free. These new badges aim to further improve clarity around browser support.

'Chrome-only' badge

The Chrome-only badge rewards those browsers that show initiative. By skipping the bikeshedding and shipping early, access to the most ardent testers is guaranteed.

'Bug-ridden' badge

The bug-ridden badge was designed for browsers that make a champion effort but require additional outside testing. This should encourage users to spend hours isolating those finicky CSS quirks so that paid developers can catch up on the next Baseline feature.

'Flatline' badge

The flatline badge remembers the forgotten browsers that may or may not support a feature. Commemoration is encouraged until someone can be bothered to go test and report back.

Baseline Needs You

As you browse the web, please remember the tireless sacrifice Google makes to enable that privilege. Ask yourself what you can do (for free) to support Google and their friends.

Web standards do not grow on trees, they’re invented at Google. But that cannot continue without your unpaid work to finish the job.

We’re all in this together to make the web a better place.

In all seriousness, Baseline is baseless. Nothing works the way it should and I’m tired of it.

Pay testers or add Baseline to the list.
