Zen, Zed, and Zits

Don't worry, this post is not about zits, but something comparably annoying: Zen and Zed. One is a browser and the other an editor. Even writing this, I don't know which is which. Their names and icons are so similar that I keep getting them confused.

Icons in my Dock on macOS. Zen with three silver circles on a black background. Zed with three silver rectangles crossed by a line.

I couldn't take it anymore; I had to take drastic measures. That's why I replaced the icon of the Zen browser application with a nice-looking e logo.

Dock again. The Zed logo is stil the same but Zen now shows the Internet Explorer 6 logo.

Here's how to do it on macOS:

  1. Close Zen.

  2. Create or download an alternative icon.

  3. Highlight the downloaded file in Finder and press CMD + C.

  4. Go to your applications folder, find Zen, right-click it, and select "Get info".

  5. Highlight the icon on the top left and press CMD + V.

Info window showing the highlighted zen logo at the top left
  6. Open Zen. (If the icon hasn't changed, open Terminal, type killall Dock and Press Enter)

You're welcome.
