Yesterday, I sat down to edit the 3rd chapter of Unorthodox Tailwind. And I found myself wondering why it was difficult to read — when I put in so much effort to write it!
Then it struck me that the writing was not flowing.
- It didn’t feel like me talking to you.
- It felt like a bunch of sentences chopped up and pieced together to try to make something short and concise.
That style of writing has merits, but it’s too choppy. So it made it difficult for a person to digest what was written.
Then, I decided to try something new.
The New Way
Instead of editing the text by hand again, I chose to
- Speak it to an AI transcriber
- Then lightly edit the obvious mistakes that the transcriber failed to catch
If I am unhappy with the output, I will repeat the process to make the sentence or paragraph much clearer.
Why This Works
This method forces me to say the things I want to say instead of reading them out loud as I’m editing.
When I’m forced to read them out loud, it creates the following effects:
- I actually feel the words and know whether they are words that I want to say.
- It allows me to flow from one thought to another
- It includes transitions that naturally surface as I talk
In the process of doing so, I realized my handwritten edits are too aggressive — because I cut out too many joining words, so the thoughts do not flow. That is the problem that made my writing choppy.
The only problem that this method creates is that the writing gets more verbose. And I am unsure of how people react to the amount of text on screen.
